X-Men 97 (Disney+)

X-Men 97 ⚔️ (Episodes 1-3)

After a 27-year hiatus, the 90s hit animated comic book series X-Men has returned.

The story of this band of mutants picks up right where it originally left off, in 1997, where Professor Xavier has passed away and now Cyclops, Wolverine, Jean Grey, and the gang must learn to coexist under new leadership while fighting off the constant onslaught of anti-mutant propaganda and the evil that continues to lurk in the shadows.

This is not a reimagining or a remake; this is a reintroduction and recementing of one of the greatest superhero animated series of all time.

X-Men 97 is firing on all cylinders; the animation is updated but still captures the essence of the original; the majority of the cast returned to reprise their roles like they never left; and, my god, are the storylines worth every second of your time.

The three episodes I got the opportunity to watch felt less like an episode of traditional television but more like three micro-movies with incredible plot structure that will leave you begging for more.

If you’re a fan of the original, then I can promise you that you will not be disappointed. It’s a faithful continuation that allows for mature storytelling while also remaining accessible to a new generation of fans.

As entertaining as the last Guardian’s was, and Loki having the beautiful ending that it did, neither compares to what this is able to do. This is everything great about comic books come to animated life.

My opinion may change as the series continues; the score most likely will, but as for the first three episodes, I have zero notes. This was perfect.

X-Men 97 is a powerful blend of nostalgia and undeniably strong storytelling, reinvigorating the superhero genre by simply going back to the basics.

Enjoy!
