Would You Love Me If I Were A Worm?
This is a classic case of don’t judge a movie by its title.
Have you ever been in a relationship where the person you’re dating looks over at you all serious and cute to ask the dumbest question ever, “Would you still love me if I were (insert unimaginable thing/situation here)?” Then you’re meant to say yes even if they say something as ridiculous as being a forty-eyed, tentacle-armed giraffe/gorilla hybrid.
Well, writer/director Aaron Alter presents the absurdity of that situation in a way that will have you chuckling at what it’s like to be on the receiving end of that question, as well as being the sincere one asking it.
As someone who has been on the receiving end of this question and forced to play along because acknowledging the comical nature of the question would kill the mood, I thought this was incredibly clever.
This story plays along with that scenario to the extreme, and Tom Keat’s tremendous performance is the main reason why any of this works. His characters heartfelt commitment to the bit is sweet and endearing while also presenting the opposite end of this conundrum, which is having your love stretched to its limits.
Obviously the question is meant to be a roundabout way of getting a pulse check on how deep someone’s love is and if that love truly knows no bounds, and though the premise is absurd, Aaron Alter crafted it so well that you’ll move past the surprisingly convincing worm within seconds of the short film starting and embrace the clever story being told.
I have to double down and give praise to Tom Keat because he is the glue that holds everything together. There is a John Candy-esque vibe in his dedicated performance that gave this film a level of confidence in itself to bring this preposterous but hilariously executed concept to life in a way I can’t imagine anyone else doing.
WOULD YOU LOVE ME IF I WERE A WORM? may not sell you at face value, but the lighthearted ribbing of a tailor-made situation is a perfect balance of dark comedy and misguided romance—with a flawless home run ending that ingeniously ties this whole idea together.
Moral of the story, good luck.
Enjoy!
