Crazy8s: THE REVEAL š
Iāve seen a number of coming out (or reveal) stories over the years, but none of them come close to having the comedic flair of Jackie Hoffartās short film THE REVEAL.
THE REVEAL subverts your typical norms by using the quipped skill of writer/director Jackie Hoffart and their comedic background to deliver a self-deprecating but completely honest take on gender and the journey of coming out to a world that still has a lot of learning to do.
Most coming-out stories or transition journeys that Iāve watched on film have had a tendency of leaning heavily into the dramatics (with a clear focus on an Oscar) or acting out a type of public service announcement that can come across as being overly preachy. THE REVEAL felt so much more engaging and allowed for the ignorance of society to be playfully demonstrated in a way that highlighted the fact most people may not fully understand what youāre going through, but theyāll root for you regardless.
Someone I will root for moving forward is Jackie Hoffart, who deserves a tremendous amount of praise for cleverly crafting what couldāve been any old monologue into a parallel-driven scene of having a gender reveal AT a gender reveal party. It was genius.
Pairing Jackieās clever writing with Emilee Nimetzās stellar performance and hearing the literal laughing-out-loud crowd echo throughout the theatre easily made THE REVEAL my favourite watch at the 2025 Crazy8s Gala.
Enjoy!
