TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL: Deep Cover 🚨 (2025)

Prime Video’s new original comedy movie DEEP COVER had its international premiere in the ‘Spotlight Narrative’ section at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The film stars Bryce Dallas Howard (Black Mirror, Jurassic World, Twilight), Orlando Bloom (Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean), and Nick Mohammed (Ted Lasso) as three improv actors who get called in by a police officer (Sean Bean—The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones) to go undercover and infiltrate the criminal underworld of London.

As ridiculous as that premise sounds, I had a surprisingly good time watching it. This was like a B-tier take on what would normally be a Guy Ritchie movie. Our three main leads play out the lives of an overlooked office worker, an improv teacher, and an out-of-touch actor, all of whom are looking for a sign that their passion-driven ways aren’t holding them back, but it’s the fact that they haven’t been given the opportunity to succeed.

The one glaring weakness of this movie is the severely miscast usage of Bryce Dallas Howard. She’s normally fine in everything she’s in, but having an American character in an all-British cast just stood out like a sore thumb. In no way did it ruin the movie; it just didn’t fit.

On the other end of that, this may be my favourite Orlando Bloom performance since… I don’t know when. I’m going through his filmography, and as much as I enjoyed Gran Turismo (2023), that was more so for the true story aspect than him being in it. I kind of want to see a sequel just for his character alone. Then we have Nick Mohammed, who essentially plays the same character he did in Ted Lasso. That’s not me diminishing his role because he was a blast to watch in this, and he has such a strong claim to that performance style that it just seems effortless.

This is one of those movies where if you’re at home and you’re doomscrolling through your streaming apps and can’t find something to watch, I’d recommend throwing this on to see if it tickles your fancy.

DEEP COVER is a serviceable comedy that overachieves through an incredibly committed cast led by the performances of Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed.
