The Studio (2025)

THE STUDIO 🎬 

The last time I laughed this hard watching something was the first time I saw the star-studded, apocalyptic comedy This Is the End (2013), so it comes as no surprise that the writers behind that movie, Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen, are also spearheading the hilarity that ensues on the new AppleTV+ comedy series THE STUDIO.

This series follows the life of Continental Studio’s newly appointed head of production, Matt Remick (Seth Rogen—Superbad, Pineapple Express, Knocked Up), as he manages his newfound power in Hollywood. Being the head of a studio has always been Matt’s dream, but when that dream becomes his reality, he must navigate the struggling industry with a power that comes with lots of responsibility and little to no recognition.

As serious as that premise sounds, this sitcom tackles the world of executives and the moviemaking business of Hollywood through the guise of a hyperbolic parody that just hits on so many different levels. What works in THE STUDIO’s favour is that it is airtight with its conceptual delivery of a scenario in Hollywood that has either made the news or a decision that will have moviegoers perplexed— which they go hard in on.

Whether it’s the studio executives overvaluing their contributions to society, the art of filmmaking vs. the money in moviemaking, or the diversifying of a film for the sake of online acceptance— those fully baked ideas will have you howling at how the industry tries to sell themselves on being in the know or simply being “right.”

There are some episodes that I would consider all-time great TV; then there are others that I just couldn’t vibe with. Every episode is quality television, but comedy is subjective, so even the ones I wasn’t personally into never lessened what I consider to be one of the best episodic sit-throughs I’ve had in a long time.

It’s also worth mentioning that this is tailor-made for those who are deeply entrenched in the goings-on of moviemaking and Hollywood celebrity. I have so much respect for showrunners who curate an idea for a very specific audience. If anything, this will leave audiences intrigued and wanting to learn more about how movie productions actually work.

THE STUDIO is ten episodes of cameo-filled, frantically paced situational comedy that hammers home the absurdity of Hollywood and the lost art of moviemaking in what I consider to be an early contender for series of the year.
