TRRs 5 Favorite Scary Movies

TRR’s 5 Favorite Scary Movies 🍿

Since it’s the Halloween season I thought it would be fun to go over and reminisce about the movies that struck fear into my soul, but as I thought more and more about those movies I began to realize a lot of these horror/thriller/slasher movies just don’t hit me the way they once did.

So instead of going over movies that scare me now (which many don’t) I’m going to put together a list of movies that after a first watch had me checking underneath my bed, feeling like someone else was in the room with me when I as all alone, or had me questioning whether I believed in the supernatural.

Now time for my list!

5. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

This was the first slasher movie I ever watched.

I was less frightened by the crazed serial killer, and more haunted by the consequence of an innocent night out with friends, and how quickly things could spiral out of control.

It had me thinking that if I did anything wrong, whatever it was would take its sweet time to get its revenge.

A great life lesson, a scary as hell way of learning it.

4. The Exorcist (1973)

My mom telling me that people left the theatre during its initial theatrical release because it was too scary, me learning that exorcism’s were a real thing, and that this was loosely based on real events was the best sell, at way too young of an age. 😂

The scene of Regan projectile vomiting, and stabbing herself with a cross scarred me for the longest time.

An all-time classic.

3. Insidious (2010)

As someone who had a lot of sleep paralysis as a kid, I connected to this movie in a way that sparked sleep paralysis in me a few nights after I had watched it.

I find dreams to be a fascinating way to find insight into your inner most subconscious thoughts. This to me does what Nightmare on Elm Street tries to do, but better.

2. The Ring (2002)

I remember watching this for the first time with my mom and brother, we were in the living room and I was trying to act like I didn’t care but internally I was freaking out. I pretended to sleep for parts of the movie because I was too scared to watch the girl come out of the TV.

This was an unintentionally great way to get your kid (me) to stop playing video games for a few days.

The best story of any horror movie I’ve ever seen, the perfect blend of jump scares and a frighteningly dark learned history. It delivers on all fronts, with a buildup of tension that will have you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

I can’t recommend this enough.

& Happy Halloween! 🎃

Side note:

I have to give a few honorable mentions, starting with Paranormal Activities - which sparked one of my favorite sub genres in found footage horror movies, while also capturing my imagination in ways that made it hard to be at home alone without thinking something paranormal was happening.

Second one I wanted to mention is Unsane, an under appreciated thriller that will make you never want to trust health professionals ever again. It was great, in the worst way.

And last but not least is the highly acclaimed Anime, Monster. This is an exhausting game of cat and mouse, that will fill you with the worst bout of despair. This captures the fine line between good & evil, breathing truth to the words “no good deed goes unpunished.”.
