ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING 🏙️ (Season 5)
When I first started watching ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING, it was just to get my murder mystery fix from the void left behind by Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot and Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc, and now I’m here five seasons later, latching onto each episode, wondering what murder these three misfits will find themselves in the middle of next.
Season four felt like the series had finally morphed into the best version of itself, which mostly involved maximizing every bit of the incredible cast they had assembled. In season five the star power may not be as bright, but the storylines given to the three main characters feel as consequential as ever.
This is the first time since the first season where you can see the obstacles of life really weighing on our team of podcasters, and though the murder (and the mystery) aspect doesn’t feel as inventive as in seasons past, I still found myself caring about our main characters’ personal journeys in a way I wouldn’t have earlier on.
What normally works in the shows favour is having three separate storylines that become intertwined by the end, but this is the first season in a while where I only care about the three leads and find the other groups who are to be exhibiting a level of camp and corniness that I found to be excruciating to get through.
That’s what makes this whole season a mixed bag. The stuff I’m kept entertained by we are getting in very small doses, and the rest I’m barely invested in.
ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING has always been this though. It’s like that one friend who is pleasant when seen a few times a year, but if you see them more regularly you’d probably get annoyed and need to distance yourself for an extended period of time.
The series is starting to (or maybe it always has and I’ve been blinded by the comfort-watch aspect of the genre) develop a Scooby Doo “I would’ve gotten away with it if it wasn’t for those pesky kids!” vibe that continues to make this a lighthearted, end-of-day watch worth the appointment viewing.
I’m holding off on final judgment on the season until I see the final episode because a murder mystery is only as good as its reason.
Enjoy!
