SWIPED 📱
SWIPED is the must-know, real-life billion-dollar story of Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe during her early days at Tinder.
If you’re in the workforce, I’m sure you’ve heard someone say “being a woman in a male-dominated industry” before, but this story tackles that age-old adage and subverts your expectations by taking that industry head-on.
The problem with SWIPED is that even though it’s a must-know story that truly deserves your attention, I’m not sure if it’s a must-watch movie.
It’s like a C-grade version of The Social Network (2010) that feels like it was made to be a series on the CW.
I say that, also wanting to note that the writing is fantastic; the tragic nature of having to endure being a woman amongst men in a toxic workplace is conveyed with urgency, but Lily James was not the right casting choice for this role.
There’s an inconsistency to her performance that made for an uneven viewing experience. It felt like every other performer had a stronghold over their character except for her, and at times it became glaring.
The story is a perfect microcosm of the #MeToo movement and the push to have equality in the workplace. This story is empowering and showcases a woman who ended up becoming a major name in tech and in business, and for that alone her story should be heard, and her name deserves to be remembered.
Lily James aside, this is still a serviceable watch with enough dramatic tension to keep you engaged from start to finish.
Enjoy!
