Marvel Studios WONDER MAN 💥
Marvel Studios’ latest venture into serialized storytelling introduces a new hero to the fold with their upcoming release, WONDER MAN.
I’d say I have slightly above-average casual comic book knowledge, but I’d never come across this character in any of my deeper dives, so my expectations for the series were practically nonexistent, aside from wanting to see what Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen, Aquaman, Matrix, Candyman) would do with the role.
Even if the projects he’s in is lacklustre, Yahya consistently delivers, and that remains true in WONDER MAN.
Both Yahya and his co-star Sir Ben Kingsley (Iron Man, Gandhi, Shutter Island, Schindlers List), who surprisingly re-enters the MCU fold, outperform the unfortunately bland, low-energy story they’re given.
Their chemistry is the only real saving grace of the show, which would’ve been far stronger outside the confines of a cinematic universe, and better served as a story about actors acting as actors acting.
The mentorship angle works well. There’s a natural friction between the two, driven by one’s experience and the other’s lack of it, and it plays best when the focus stays on their careers rather than some half-baked superhero conundrum.
That’s been an issue with a lot of Marvel series. They often start with an intriguing premise, but once they’re forced to weave in the larger universe or tack on an origin story that feels secondary to the characters’ humanity, everything starts to float adrift.
A notable strength of the series lies in its self-awareness, using self-deprecating humor to critique both itself and the broader absurdities of Hollywood in a way that nails current fan and critic sentiment.
If you’re looking for a story about an unlikely duo motivating each other to land a role in a superhero movie, you might actually enjoy this.
But in my book, this one’s a major skip.
Enjoy!
